Oklahoma school bill faces budget shortfall and staged raises
The House committee approved a school bill with a funding gap of about ten million beyond the 68 million proposed for the next two years. Governor Gary cites a 300 dollar teacher raise as possible, with starting salaries at 2700, and potential increases up to 3000 in a later year if economies are found. The panel settled on a minimum starting salary of 3300 with 100 dollar annual increases, while a Langley proposal would defer increments for first year teachers. Attempts to close the deficit with an income tax restoration or oil royalty tax failed. The bill awaits both chambers and the governor, while another measure raised the school code per capita cost index from 250 to 400.
