Enid Mebs Guinn and Shaw wrested the NAIA State AA crown with a 92 73 victory over Pace Murray. Tony Guinn and Leon Shaw sparked a fast start as Murray pulled away late, securing the championship at Oklahoma City.
In St Petersburg on March 18 four Yankee players were sidelined by injuries during a spring camp exhibition. Bill Skowron fractured a thumb, Elston Howard strained a thigh, Norm Siebern strained an arm, and Hank Bauer pulled a back muscle, all affecting the lineup and practice pace.
Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins battled to a 2-2 tie as Montreal clung to second place with 78 points and Boston on 7. Both squads have three games left. the runner up faces New York Rangers first round while the third place faces Detroit.

Quinn hints at trading Billy Brion and an infielder possibly Mantilla or Logan, with Mantilla the Braves’ only feasible infielder.
Tulsa Central outpaced 12 teams at the University of Oklahoma pool to win the state high school swimming title with 61 points. Bartlesville finished second with 38, Tulsa Edison 32, Tulsa Rogers 30, and Peru City 22 as Northwest Classen of Oklahoma City earned 21.
North Carolina, led by Tit le Tommy Kearns, slimly defeated Syracuse 67 58 to extend the program’s consecutive victory streak to 30, an NCAA single season record. Rosenbluth added 23 as UNC advances to the NCAA semifinals in Kansas City.
Ron Delany of Villanova won the mile in 4:03.8 at the Chicago Dai Relays before about 16,000, nearly matching the indoor American record. Milt Campbell also posted 7.1 seconds in the 60-yard hurdles, close to the American indoor mark, while Charles Jenkins dominated the 600-yard run for Villanova.
Corvallis bulletin reports North Carolina defeated Syracuse 37 28 at halftime and held a nine point edge, led by Kearns with 22 points including 14 of 19 from the line as Carolina foul trouble stifled Syracuse. Syracuse struggled from the line and could not overcome the Tar Heel advantage.
Michigan State rallied from a halftime hole to outplay favored Kentucky 80 68 in the NCAA Midwest regional final. A balanced attack and key rebounds in the late stretch carried MSU to the victory as Notre Dame held off Pittsburgh for third place.
In Manchester on March 16 Ken Wood briefly set an indoor miler time of 3:37.44. Officials later still debated the correct lap count as Hewson and Ibbotson also ran, with some estimates claiming the distance was off by 198 or 70 yards. Wood’s time stood at 3:37.4 despite the confusion.
