U.S. Denies Shelling Endangered Soviet Vessel Claim
The United States released a note to the Soviet embassy denying that any U S Navy ship engaged in target practice near Norfolk endangering Soviet or other vessels. Washington said a Russian protest alleging firing near a trawler is unfounded though a trawler beyond seven miles was sighted beyond the gunnery range. The Defense Department noted no ships were within 12 miles and an unidentified trawler was observed beyond that distance.
