Oil Spill Prompts Coast Guard Cleanup Effort on St Lawrence
A 15 mile stretch of the St Lawrence Seaway faced a major oil spill after a barge struck a shoal near Wellesley Island. About 250000 gallons of fuel oil blanketed waters and shores, halting traffic for 12 hours. crews expect most oil gone by Friday with full cleanup in two weeks. Alexandria Bay Mayor Steve Taylor declared a state of emergency as beaches and parks closed. NEPCO owner Edward Carey agreed to fund cleanup and local offices prepared to handle damage claims.
