Syrians push into southern Lebanon near Sidon
Thruce and main Syrian forces dug in 12 miles east of Beirut outside Sidon. A spokesman for the joint Palestinian leftist command accuses Hafez Assad of using Arab peace efforts to gain time for a decisive victory against Palestinians and Lebanese Muslims. The command says a Syrian column moved into Arkoub region, overrunning two Palestinian commando bases 10 miles from the Israeli border, while Israeli analysts see no threat to Israel and note the move aims to open a supply route to hills overlooking Sidon. Palestinian sources say Syria seeks to halt raids into Israel by Al Fatah and other guerrilla groups.
