Oklahoma Literature Commission Created Amid Censorship Debate
Gov. Raymond Gavestonday signed a bill creating a six member Oklahoma Literature Commission despite press requests to kill it. The board’s two members pledged to proceed slowly on actions, citing concerns over censorship and potential impact on press freedom and public access to questionable publications. Local officials and scholars voiced worries about obscenity and the commission’s authority, while advocates argued safeguards for children and rights of expression.
