Fighting In Lebanon Persists Amid Peace Pact Reports
In Lebanon savage fighting continued despite reports that Moslem and Christian leaders approved a preliminary peace agreement negotiated by Syria and Palestinian guerillas. Hospitals reported 68 killed and 89 wounded in Beirut and southern Lebanon since Tuesday. The war has left about 33,000 dead in 16 months. Christians appealed to the Red Cross and UN to probe mass executions in the besieged Tal Zaatar camp. Arafat’s command said 157 died in a shelter collapse at Tal Zaatar. 400 refugees were unaccounted. Both sides announced general approval to a draft accord, with Syria, Lebanon, and the PLO mediating and the Soviet Union aiding. Damascus hinted Egypt and Iraq opposed the reconciliation. Christian factions formed a joint command to control discipline amid internal rifts.
