Soviet Navy closes gap in nuclear subs says Jane's Fighting Ships
Jane's Fighting Ships reports the United States leads in nuclear powered submarines by five vessels but Russia is building them twice as fast, potentially equalizing the gap. Russia produces about 10 nuclear subs yearly while the U S plans five in 1972 and six in 1973, with 313 diesel electric subs for Russia and 36 for the United States. A 26–0 lead in large carriers and 216 destroyers for the U S contrasts with Russia’s growing carrier program to 30,000 ton vessels.
