Boundary dispute between Hopi and Navajo flares in Arizona
In northern Arizona the 98 year old Navajo herdsman Tsinijinnie Yazzie is halted by a ranger and his 75 sheep impounded. The feud over joint use land has spurred congressional action led by Rep. Sam Steiger to divide 1,822,080 acres, a plan that could uproot about 6,000 Navajos. The two tribes have long clashed over reservations and borders, with Hopi and Navajo leaders arguing for dialogue while traditionalists challenge the tribal council’s authority and seek to preserve land and culture.
