Amtrak Expands Command Of 722 Miles Of Track
Amtrak is taking ownership of 722 miles of track along with hundreds of stations as part of a post April 1 rail reorganization. The purchases total about 90 million dollars and include more than a dozen repair facilities and rail assets. Officials say ownership will improve service, speed repairs, and protect stations from highway projects. The Northeast corridor from Boston to Washington leads purchases, with plans to upgrade facilities and eventually run electric trains up to 120 mph.
