U S Balloonist Aborts Try At Crossing Atlantic
Karl Thomas abandoned his Atlantic crossing attempt when a fierce thunderstorm forced ditching of his 90 foot balloon near Lakehurst New Jersey. He survived a 200 foot jump into the sea and spent four days adrift on a raft before rescue by the Dekabrist, a Soviet freighter, amid reports of rib injuries and a bleeding lung. The Coast Guard tracked his location hundreds of miles from New York as his wife prepared to join him in Rotterdam.
