California Population Poised to Equal Texas and New York
A Washington report from the Commission on Population Growth and the American Future projects California will match New York and Texas in population within three decades. It notes California would hold 43 House seats and 61 electoral votes after 2000 reapportionment, reshaping national power and Senate representation. The study, authored by Richard Levine, foresees a continued westward population shift and more suburban congressmen, with a shrinking proportional Senate footprint for California.
