New method repairs infant heart defects without surgery
In Newport Beach California, Dr William Rashkind outlined a tube and patch technique to close holes in the heart septum of infants without open surgery. The method uses a catheter through a groin vein to deploy a collapsible mesh patch that expands and grips the hole, effective for defects about the size of a nickel to a quarter but not for larger openings. early tests show success in five of six children aged 5 to 15, with one case too large to repair.
