U S intelligence says the Soviet Union may be preparing a larger naval presence off the West African coast near Angola. Four Russian tanker ships and several warships have been tracked, with additional vessels possibly reinforcing West African forces.
Sara Jane Moore, once an FBI informant with radical ties, is sentenced to life for attempting to kill President Ford on Sept. 22. She told judges she was not sorry except for wasting her life, urged by groups that pushed violence, and linked U.S. assassinations to dissent. A protester cried out after the verdict as Moore faced Judge Samuel Conti in San Francisco.
Board of the troubled Family Health Care Services, Inc. dismisses acting Project Director Kent Corey for the second time in a month. Dr. Jose Barroso and Mrs. Gloria Sherbourne are named to run agency operations while the group faces possible HEW funding cuts and financial strain.
A bomb exploded in a downtown San Francisco office building injuring two and causing about 200000 in damage. The blast, set in a restroom ceiling between the Iranian consulate and Stauffer Chemical offices on the 13th and 14th floors, prompted warnings and an FBI search as authorities investigated the motive and device.
The Lawton USO will start a contributing campaign to raise about 10 000 for 1976 operations. Individual memberships cost 25 and corporate 100, said Felix Mantell USO director. United Way has increased its 1976 support from 16 500 to 24 000, leaving about 10 000 still needed locally.
The Lawton Fort Sill area expects a cooler turn tonight and Friday as winds shift from gusty southerly to northwesterly. Lows near 30 tonight with Friday highs in the low 50s. Thursday saw a high of 52 and a low of 30.
Macomb Contracting Corporation of Houston led 12 bids at 16.67 million for a waterline to move Waurika Reservoir water to Lake Fadsworth Duncan and Comanche. D and G Construction of Tulsa won a six-ramps job at 90 750. The pipeline aims to supply Lawton via a 42 inch line by 1978 with 40 million cost.
About 100 men stormed a labor troubled site in Lake Charles, La. A 26 year old worker Joe A Hooper of Payne Keller Construction Co was shot dead as armed men rode a forklift through gates. Five others were injured as the mob overturned trailers and damaged vehicles. Police say the incident followed a labor council picket over wages and conditions.
In Los Angeles more than 30 people, mostly firefighters, were taken to hospitals after a print shop fire in Chatsworth. Investigators cite inhalation of a poisonous gas as the cause as first responders and spectators were affected. In Beirut, right wing Christian forces pressed toward two Palestinian refugee camps amid Lebanon’s civil war, reporting the heaviest 24 hour toll of nine months.
