Early Roads and Taxi Memories From North Texas Century Ago

L B Johnson recalls teen years in 1906 when he ran a bare bones Lambert automobile taxi over roadless prairies between Vernon and Crowell Texas. He and his father served Santa Fe railroad workers building the Kansas City to San Angelo line, charging about four dollars an hour for open car rides. They bought the Lambert in 1905 for six hundred dollars, atop a worn engine and no tires, top or lamps, then added a 1906 Ford to supplement transport.
