The State Department urged western Europe to abandon planned economies as Congress prepared to debate the Marshall plan. Officials stressed the appeal was not a threat and highlighted a 15 document appraisal of the Paris report, ahead of Secretary Marshall’s testimony.

A motor ship carrying about 600 people radioed an SOS from off Japan claiming five feet of water in its hold. Believed to be the M. V. Dvina, the vessel reported its position about 140 miles from Hakodate and requested assistance from the Hakodate harbor master.
OKLAHOMA CITY Jan 7 Gov Ray J Turner said he may appoint a man to head Oklahoma s newly emphasized industrial mobilization program The idea arose from a conference with Sabr force industrial planning experts and Oklahoma industrialists The meeting produced the state industrial mobilization committee to coordinate the program and aid in securing air force production contracts John Dunkin Tulsa was named head and Clarence Burch secretary of the committee The effort aims to make Oklahoma a small scale arsenal of democracy the organizers said
President Truman urges a cost of living tax credit that trims individual taxes by up to $180 for a family with two children while offsetting the relief with higher corporate levies. Treasury spokesmen estimate 10 million of 50 million filers could escape federal income tax under the plan.
Lawrence Banteau president of the Lawton Rangers announced two major Pioneer Celebration events for 1948. Roden and parade committeemen were named at a monthly meeting along with three new directors for the club's 1948 activities. Ed Russell was named chairman of the 1948 pioneer parade with Glen Fuqua and Emery Cowley as his committeemen. The rodeo committee includes J. R. (Bob) Dawes Art Ashline and Bob Ensley. Building permits totaling 71000 for new residential construction were issued today for 14 homes in Lawton Heights. Most homes are being erected by B A Allen, a Lawton lumberman, with six to be finished by June and others by April 1. Jack Allen, his son, is associated in building activity. Ros Reynolda RB Boswell cited as building superintendents.
Lawton post office receipts rose gradually over six months with a total of $154,160.20 for the year ending 1947, down 44 percent from 1946. FRANKFURT, Jan. 7 P The Anglo American military governors of Germany proposed today to set up a cabinet two house legislature and high court in their economically merged occupation zone. Gen Lucius D. Clay and Gen Sir Brian Robertson outlined an eight point program aimed at strengthening the economy of the zone as officials from American British and German ranks met to map western Germany’s future.
