From Slave to Priest First Black Catholic Cleric in U.S.
Augustine Tolton, born 1854 to enslaved parents in Missouri, became the first acknowledged black Catholic priest in the United States. He faced rejection by seminaries, studied in Rome, and served in Quincy and Chicago before dying in 1897 at age 43. His legacy inspires efforts to broaden awareness of his life and message against racism in the church.
