HEW Reorganization Aims to Cut 2561 Middle Managers
HEW plans to eliminate about 2561 jobs mainly midlevel managers earning 22 000 to 47 000 annually as part of a sweeping restructuring. The agency seeks to reassign staff at equivalent pay and obtain early retirement authority for up to 8500 workers while delaying pay cuts for overgraded employees until late 1979. The Civil Service Commission issued guidelines to require aggressive job reclassification and internal placement across agencies during the grace period through December 31 1979.
