Five Injured In Hotel Laval Fire In Omaha
A four alarm blaze tore through Hotel Laval in downtown Omaha early today injuring at least five, two severely. Four survivors were rescued from the third floor by ladder trucks as dense smoke and near freezing temperatures hampered crews. Fire officials said the fire began on the northeast corner of the third floor and climbed an elevator shaft to the top two floors before being extinguished about 45 minutes after it started at 7 15 a.m. The hotel, about 60 years old, has 150 rooms with 75 occupied by permanent residents. Firefighters credited James Foreman of Texas with saving an elderly woman by carrying her to a window and down a ladder. Sandra Thurman and her four children escaped from the fourth floor via elevator to the lobby.
