Gov Raymond Gary and a group of Oklahoma senators tentatively agreed to exempt feed seed and fertilizer from the 2 percent sales tax if the change does not cut welfare aid. Gary warned the impact on welfare checks is uncertain and some fear lost revenue may reduce benefits.
Postmaster Beanie Stephens announced four major promotions in the Lawson post office system. Gene L. Snider becomes superintendent of mails, succeeding Henry J. Haylik, with Snider formerly Fort Sill branch superintendent and starting as a sub-clerk in Lawton June 16, 1985. Keith Dayton rises to Fort Sill branch superintendent, to be assisted by Bernard Montgomery, promoted to assistant superintendent. Garnett C. Keeran is named assistant superintendent at the Sheridan Road branch, after starting as a sub-clerk February 16, 1942.
Troopers patrol New York New Jersey and Pennsylvania to curb violence amid a third day milk price strike by the Tristate Master Dairy Guild. About 3 500 dairymen involved, 48 plants affected, 2 048 925 pounds of milk diverted, with no city supply disruption reported.
Three men including an assistant manager of a Howard Johnson restaurant on the Turner Turnpike faced embezzlement charges after admitting they staged a fake holdup to cover a $2,953.95 robbery at the Chandler location. Sheriff officials said the money was recovered from a rented farm east of Chandler where the loot was buried in four cans and a gallon bucket.
Mayor FR Ellsworth announced 274 stray dogs had been picked up in the first 18 days of a 100 day rabies quarantine begun February 8 after a dog outbreak in the west part of the city. Extra crews will aid the animal warden to clear streets.
The Oklahoma Department of Commerce and Industry sponsors an all day session Friday at the Lawtonian Hotel. About 100 Chamber of Commerce members and civic leaders will hear Dr. Randall T. Klemme discuss findings from the Fantus industrial survey conducted over the past year. Registration opens at 9 50 am with the session starting at 10 30 am.
Samuel David Hawkins, 25, the youngest U.S. turncoat from Korea, quit Red China claiming Soviet action in Hungary justified his departure. He arrived at the border by train and crossed on foot, was questioned by U.S. officials, and will receive a one way passport home. Hawkins said 42 months in China felt wasted, and noted potential trouble with the State Department on return.
Prospective candidates for spring city elections may file starting Thursday with a March 9 deadline. Pauline Joyner notes registration for the March 19 primary is light. Voters must re register if not voting in the last three elections. March 8 is the primary registration deadline. Residency in precinct six months in county and one year in state. Offices include mayor police chief city clerk treasurer street commissioner and four councilmen. A general election only if multiple party candidates oppose.
Shifting southerly winds and a bright sun pushed temperatures up across the state. A new cold front is expected to cross Oklahoma Thursday, possibly triggering light rain in the western half. Lawton stays warm with partly cloudy skies and a chance of light rain Thursday. Tuesday rain was confined to the eastern half, Pot eau receiving the largest amount at 0.59 inches.

Wooden forms have been erected for the semicircular arches that will form the Tomlinson junior high school gymnasium roofline. Forms will be poured when weather permits and after cement sets, rims will move and more concrete poured to complete enough arches for the roof. John D. Shoemaker, city school superintendent, announced the plan.

Washington report shows James B. Elkins, a racketeer aiding gamblers in Portland, testified he faced death threats from Frank Brewster, Teamsters vice president. The FBI notified that Elkins’ older brother Carl, a Phoenix businessman, received a death threat by phone. The warning followed Brewster’s outburst toward Elkins in 1955, citing his two “boys” and naming William Langley and Clyde Crosby as associates.
