Supreme Court to decide parochial school union bargaining
The Supreme Court agreed to review whether federal labor law can compel church schools to bargain with lay teacher unions. The case centers on Roman Catholic dioceses in Chicago and Fort Wayne South Bend and could affect about 108,000 lay teachers in nearly 10,000 Catholic schools nationwide. The NLRB argues labor rights apply, while church officials cite First Amendment religious freedom.
