Joyous Tears Mark Homecoming For Second Group Of U S POWs
The second group of 20 repatriated U S prisoners of war arrived at Travis Air Force Base California after a long flight from the Philippines. Navy Captain James B Stockdale spoke of loyalty as he stepped from the StarLifter Jet amid cheering crowds. The previous day 20 POWs arrived from Vietnam to similar scenes of joy. The 40 former prisoners were to be flown to hospitals near their homes with additional evacuees en route from Saigon and Clark Air Base. The homecoming at RAVIS AFB reflected a restrained, emotional reception requested by President Nixon.
