Officials Promise Safety Fixes for Bay Area Rapid Transit
Sacramento officials say safety problems on the Bay Area Rapid Transit system will be solved and 80 mile per hour cars will begin operating under San Francisco Bay in September. A legislative committee report found the current automatic system unsafe but improvable without delaying opening. The 28 mile Oakland Fremont section opened last year and service expanded to Richmond. San Francisco service is slated for September.

BART Safety Fees and Mishaps Prompt Panel Review
After a 28 mile opening, five riders were hurt when automatic control failed allowing a fast train to crash into a parking lot. Subsequent issues included a derailment and misrouting due to flawed auto and manual control integration. Engineers from Hewlett Packard and others urged more testing before service. State Senator Alfred Alquist called the system basically safe but improvable.
