Senate Panel Eyes Cuban Missile Buildup Hearings
McNamara was to testify this afternoon in a closed Senate Armed Services subcommittee session. McCone’s appearance was reportedly arranged by President Kennedy. Unconfirmed reports said the testimony could be made public later as the White House seeks to quiet partisan debate over Soviet arms buildup in Cuba. Senator John Stennis heads the subcommittee with members including Symington Bartlett Jackson Saltonstall Smith and Goldwater. Kennedy said U S intelligence found no evidence of a large buildup, noting 17 000 to 18 000 Soviet troops in Cuba and limited arrivals since the blockade lift in October. He cited Cuban Soviet activity and warned of growing power in the Caribbean. Some Republicans, including Dirksen and Keating, pushed for public hearings, while Humphrey urged opening the inquiry for public testimony from officials like McCone. Stennis declined comment. Dirksen noted information aligning with Bruce’s claim that several offensive missiles remained after 42 were removed during the October crisis.
