Moon explorers find orange lunar soil on Taurus Littrow
Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt report orange soil samples gathered during an eight mile moon excursion at Taurus Littrow. The orange dust may date to the moon’s last volcanism and be rust or a reddish compound awaiting lab confirmation. Evans in orbit noted volcanic formations while awaiting the crew’s return for homeward journey toward December 19.
