Washington defeated Philadelphia 23 7 to secure the NFC East title for the first time since 1940. The coach George Allen praised reaching the immediate goal while aiming higher, as the Redskins captured the division on Sunday.
Pittsburgh overwhelmed Cleveland 30 0 at Three Rivers Stadium to move one game ahead in the American Conference Central as Franco Harris surged for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Terry Bradshaw connected on a 78 yard scoring pass. Roy Gerela added three field goals as Pittsburgh shut down the Browns to 126 total yards.
Marty Domres connected on three touchdown passes and ran for a score but Johnny Unitas stole the spotlight with a 63 yard TD to Eddie Hinton after Domres left injured. Unitas, a 39 year old legend, entered at coach John Sandusky’s request and received a standing ovation.
USC completed an 11 0 season by routing Notre Dame 45 23 as Anthony Davis scored six touchdowns. Auburn upset Alabama 17 16 with late plays, leaving USC as the lone unbeaten top contender for the national title with Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Penn State as challengers.
Vanderbilt Commodores, unranked in the preseason AP poll, upset Louisville 66-57 and beat Kansas 72-64 on the road, signaling a potential 5-0 start as they host SMU at home and then the Vanderbilt Holiday Invitational. UCLA and Kentucky also posted notable results while upsets by Seattle and Santa Clara highlighted the weekend.
Oklahoma coach Chuck Fairbanks praises the Sugar Bowl bound Sooners after a 38 15 regular season finale win over Oklahoma State to claim the Big Eight title. He credits defense for improved balance and notes Greg Pruitt played hurt while aiming for a Sugar Bowl return.
Ian Sunter a 19 year old Dundee Scotland place kicker booted a 34 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 13 10 Grey Cup win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders Fleming scored Hamiltons only other points a touchdown Sunter accounted for seven of Hamiltons 13 points the win gave Hamilton the 60th Grey Cup and extended the East West series dominance to 31 14.
Jack Nicklaus closes the season with the Walt Disney World Open win and eyes 1973 goals. He holds 13 majors tied with Bobby Jones, topped by his U S Open and Masters victories and a record $320 542 in earnings. He targets Augusta National for his 14th major.
Lawton High School hosts the L Club initiation and banquet at 7 p m in the school cafeteria. Clyde Powers, 1970 LHS graduate and Oklahoma University football player, will speak and may bring OU teammates. Bo Bowman says the public is invited and the meal costs $1 50.
Ike and Hale meet at Lewis Field Stillwater Saturday 2 p.m. to decide the Oklahoma Class 4A football title. Ike carries 11-0. Hale 10-0-1. Tickets $2 adults $1 students. Class 3A Ada Friday Oklahoma City Southeast and Okmulgee meet.
