Ten Thousand Rebel Nomads Surrender to French Forces

In Casablanca Morocco on August 27 estimated 10,000 rebel tribesmen surrendered with arms and families to French troops while thousands others fled deeper into central Morocco defying capitulation orders. The surrender brings to 20,000 the total bowing to French force after uprisings that killed over 2,000. An eight day ultimatum was issued for remaining holdouts to lay down arms and pledge allegiance. Jet fighters and heavily armed troops aided the operation under Gen. Andre Franchi.

Flames Damage City Apartment In Late Night Fire

A three room wood frame apartment at 1401 S llih suffered heavy damage in a fire that started around 10 45 p m Saturday. The center apartment bore the brunt with roof shingles burned away and two rooms gutted. Fire Chief Harris Hancock could not determine a cause by nightfall. investigators suspected someone may have been inside. Firefighter Marvin Linebarger narrowly escaped serious injury when he slid from the roof as two bystanders watched. Central and South Side station units responded to the alarm.

Showers Forecast In Southwest Area

Lawton residents hoped for improved Sunday weather from the local forecaster as Saturday topped 98 degrees after a 68 degree night. The U S Weather Bureau predicted scattered thundershowers Sunday afternoon and evening in the southwest region with 90 to 95 degree highs.

Fire roars through Whiting refinery tank farm

A gasoline fueled explosion at Standard Oil tank farm Whiting Indiana triggered a multi hour blaze endangering 48 blocks of homes. About 240 National Guard troops mobilized to deter looting as residents fled. Damage estimated over 10 million with insurance covering plant losses. Two deaths reported among casualties.

Five Escape Jail In Pryor

Five Mayes County prisoners overpowered a jailer and fled in a stolen car from Pryor Oklahoma tonight. Two were recaptured within an hour between Pryor and Tulsa by the Highway Patrol. Jailer C McCracken said the inmates tied him with an icepick while being served food around 8 30 p m. Troopers Strain and Busby nabbed two men on State Highway 33. The three remaining suspects fled from the car near the junction of SH 33 and U S 66 east of Tulsa. Names given for the three at large are John Magbie Ivan Welch and Joe Donaldson. Recaptured were James C Morgan and Edison C Burr. The escapees reportedly had a .45 caliber automatic.

Jet Fighter Pilot Lands After Top Blown During Dive

London August 27 Wing Commander Roland Beaumont a World War I ace recounted how he guided Britain s newest top secret P 1 jet back to base after the canopy ripped off and his helmet was torn away during a 600 mile an hour dive. He managed to pull the jet out of the dive and land safely at the base.

Frederick Breaks Southwest Industry Jinx

Frederick, aided by a WWII air force base and civic push, is poised to land Oklahoma's only helicopter factory with production set by January 1. The city also seeks a leather goods plant expected to start with over 100 workers, while others like Waurika Walters Temple have failed to win such deals.

Holiday Safety Drive Launched in Lawton District

Troopers in the Lawton district join Oklahoma Highway Patrol to run a Labor Day weekend safety drive. Lt. F A Mussen says 50 000 motorists will be contacted as patrols work round the clock with days off canceled. Statewide 356 killed and 7 836 injured in 17 771 accidents so far this year. 1953 Labor Day toll was four killed and 35 injured.

In Torit Far Upper Nile village mutineers facing advancing government forces agreed to surrender after a week of rebellion against northern command. South Sudan soldiers had refused placement under North Sudan officers.

Truman Denies Feud With Eisenhower In Ind City

Proposed Tax Levies Slashed By Auditors

County and city ad valorem tax rates were reduced in a two and a half hour Saturday courthouse meeting. Lawton’s rate fell from 80.89 to 79.08 per thousand, with other mills trimmed: city 16.50 to 15.75, school 44.72 to 43.83, and county 19.67 to 19.50. Geronimo residents face 125.67 per thousand, down from 131.01, while most other towns show lower rates than the excise board figures.
