City health officials plan to tag noncompliant garbage cans Friday as part of Project Clean Up. Red stickers will condemn unsanitary receptacles and instruct owners which containers meet city ordinances. Dr. Charles Miller said improper cans are widespread in business and residential areas and cited careless maintenance as the cause.
Stormy session ends with defeats for both proposals. City will not hire a private garbage contractor or switch to leasing police cars. Council votes 4 to 2 to not advertise for bids, amid sharp disagreements and mayoral quip. See further details on Council, Page 2.
In Tachikawa Japan enraged farmers and labor unionists formed human walls to block a government land survey for U S Air Force base expansion. There was shoving but no injuries reported as Sunakawa villagers and outsiders later allowed 20 surveyors to depart after chants of survey team go home.
Lt Col Paul V Liles Nugents star witness in the Nu gent trial at Fort Sill is charged at Fort Lewis with collaboration with the enemy. The 39 year old West Pointer allegedly gave aid and comfort to the enemy while senior officer of POW Camp 12.
Lawton held the No. 4 spot in state retail sales for July while Comanche county dipped to fifth with 90 410 09. July 1954 figures were 99 794 12. Enid and Kay county were ahead, Garfield fourth at 98 651 75. Lawton’s July 85 493 13 marked the third highest monthly total in history.
Memorial Hospital in Lawton now operates all four floors with 102 beds, 16 children’s cribs, and 30 bassinets after opening in 1951. Administrator William C. Love says the facility is near capacity with 77 patients and 14 babies and notes ongoing equipment upgrades. Two full time anesthetists are planned for October with Miss Lottie Edwards joining and Myrtle Lindsay already serving.

A lone gunman in his mid twenties robbed Horseshoe Bar at 2090 near noon taking 300 dollars at gunpoint from owner Don Murphy. Detectives questioned three suspects then released them. a witness saw a young man hurrying west along an alley near C and D.
A U S Air Force airman went berserk at the Manston fighter base in South England, firing two guns and killing three people while wounding others. He hijacked a car, fled to a beach, and was cornered by Air Force and British police in a beach battle where he was wounded and reportedly died by his own hand. The victims included two U S servicemen, an RAF airman, and a British civilian woman was among the wounded. The gunman was identified as A 2 C Napoleon Green, 21, of Chicago. victims named were Airman 2 C Nelson Gresham of Philadelphia, Sgt Laurence Velquez of Colorado, and RAF Corp H B Grayer. See page 2.
France calls up 60,000 reservists to bolster forces in Morocco and Algeria after weekend clashes that left about 2,000 dead. Defense ministry plans spread over three to four months. first to serve are signal corps and engineers to restore disrupted communications. Premier Faure and President Coty rush to Paris for consultations while Faure previously met Moroccan leaders at Aix les Bains. Relative quiet returns as cleanup continues amid internal political dissent over negotiations with nationalist leaders.
John Henry Sellars, a 24 year old Oklahoma City postal worker, reported his car stolen and chased a fleeing thief who had taken his vehicle. In the pursuit the postal truck rammed the car, but rolled away causing collisions with three trucks and a station wagon before the thief was captured.
Dr. Charles Miller, county-city health director, calls the lag in second polio shots criminal for children who had the first dose. He reports 914 local children still need the second shot and notes 2,316 first shots given with only 1,402 second shots to date. Weekend make up clinics are held as families vacation.
A blaze in a crowded east side tenement claimed six young lives. Victims ranged from nine weeks to six years. Police identified the children as William Murphy Jr, Veronica Murphy, Larry Murphy, Ronald Cottrell, Lever Grove, and Perk Grove.
The United States promises an eighty million dollar relief program as six flood ravaged states coordinate reconstruction. Governor George M Leader of Pennsylvania says he will brief legislative leaders and seek funds and tax measures to aid recovery. Evacuations of ten thousand youths from camps in the Pocono Mountains begin amid disrupted lines and transport. Connecticut and Massachusetts conduct similar evacuations as relief teams rush anti typhoid shots and provisions. Clear weather aids work as rains subsided by midnight.
Lawton area forecasts call for continued heat with highs near 100 degrees today and Thursday and a low around 75 tonight. Meteorologists note Gulf moisture will keep humidity high as the eastern half of Oklahoma trends warmer and a 103 degree extreme southwest high is possible. Tuesday marked Lawton’s hottest day since mid July, reaching 100 degrees.
SOUTH SAN GABRIEL Calif UP A 29 year old father who allegedly threatened to blow up both himself and his infant son when they disappeared last January was sought again after vanishing with the same boy and an older son. Sheriff's deputies issued an all points bulletin for Harold Lewis after his ex wife Olga M Lewis said he took their two sons Gary Wayne 2 and James 10 to visit Disneyland in Anaheim Tuesday and did not return.
