Accused Officer Testifies in Fort Sill Homicide Trial
Lt. Col. Walter Berger testified he was told by Lt. Col. Walter Short to fire the mortars only if on target. Berger said Short is confused and does not remember the events that led to the deaths of four infantrymen during a training exercise at Fort Sill on June 22. He also claimed Maj. Robert Phillips said he had no responsibility as safety officer, while Swink's earlier account suggested Berger checked the fire amid doubts about the target.
