Dillon Faces Quiz On Tax Program
Washington UPI reports the House Ways & Means Committee plans sharp questioning of Treasury Secretary Dillon over President Kennedy's equalization tax proposal aimed at stemming gold exports and reducing the balance of payments deficit. Democrats stay noncommittal while Republicans prefer cutting foreign aid and defense spending to new taxes. The Senate Commerce Committee also eyes public accommodations legislation in a closed session with a likely Aug. 28 report.

Veterans widows and disabled children aid bills advance in House
The House passed two veterans bills by voice vote sending them to the Senate. One raises service widow payments to 120 dollars a month with 12 percent of the husband’s basic pay, while the other offers education allowances of 110 dollars a month for disabled veterans’ children ages 18 to 23 for up to 36 months. Estimated first year costs are 11.779 million and 3.3 million respectively. The Commerce Department cites a second quarter balance of payments deficit near 1.3 billion, a rise from early 1963. Some officials expect the figure to be distorted for the year. Plus, thousands of federal workers may take a paid day off August 28 for the freedom march, though essential services should remain operating.
