Rains Boost Cotton Crop Outlook in Southwest Oklahoma
Scattered showers and thunderstorms brought heavy moisture to southwest Oklahoma last night and today. Reports from Fletcher Frederick Cyril and Lawton show rainfall varying from a tenth to 1.5 inches helping late cotton crops and feed, with minor damage from a lightning strike in Fletcher and a death from a lightning incident in Sayre. Farmers expect the rain to push crops over the hump and improve prospects in Kiowa and Cotton counties as more moisture arrives.

Tumbles Hurt Two Trainmen
A pair of El Reno trainmen were treated for leg injuries after tumbling from the same freight train. Lee J. Hanks, 41, a fireman, suffered a broken leg and was in Southwestern hospital. Hanks was found by Police Officers Eugene Flowers and Frank Sandranno near the Dee crossing shouting for help. H. J. Felton, 33, a brakeman, sprained his ankle and sustained cuts and bruises after falling from the train about three and a half hours earlier at Richard Spur. Ira Q Beasley a black police officer was released on 2000 dollar bond after a Saturday arrest on charges of accepting a bribe. Police say a bootlegger paid 65 dollars for police protection of a whisky business in Lawton. A preliminary hearing is set for Friday at 2 pm before Justice Marvin Cameron to decide if there is enough evidence for trial. The bootlegger’s name is not listed as a witness and remains anonymous.

Creed Hargrave King of Lawton files a $143000 damage suit in district court over a March 5 1952 two car collision on U S 62 near Cache. Plaintiffs allege Almon R Long Oklahoma City and J Frank Wolfe Jr with Mayme S Wolfe caused wreck while Long was intoxicated and driving recklessly. Long and King were injured. St Marys School Sees Record Enrollment This Year
Over 300 grade school pupils registered at St Marys by noon and about 55 high school students enrolled. Enrollment closes at 5 p.m. today though late registrations allowed before September 1. Sister M Macaria notes record turnout expected, surpassing last year’s 480, as seven sisters from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio join Lawton faculty along with several lay teachers.

Mother In Hospital After Storm Injuries
Mrs Ernest Penick of Star Route Lawton was admitted to Memorial hospital for surgery on injuries from August 3 when a wind storm destroyed her home east of Medicine Park. She has a clot and leg swelling, and has not walked recently. Her 17 year old daughter Peggy Lee was released after treatment for a back injury and a fractured arm. Seven family members were indoors when the wind demolished the house.
