Oklahoma City police say Ft. Hood soldier Tommie L. Pickett on leave was shot after a taxi robbery spree. Patrolman Jim Peck engaged the suspect, who opened fire wounding the officer and two cab drivers before Pickett was arrested following a blood trail.
The Associated Press reports three fatalities on Oklahoma roads. Thirty year old Joe David Riley of Hominy died when his car left the road two miles south of a culvert and became airborne. Fifteen year old Milton Newberry of Fairland died when his motorcycle was struck by a car on US Highway 60 two miles east of Fairland in Ottawa County.
The Northwest Kiwanis Club meets at noon in Lawton Heights United Methodist Church to hear Lawton attorney Bob Schacher discuss a proposed Comanche County Courthouse. A $3.3 million bond election to finance the project is set for Sept. 12.

The Staggers plan creates an independent regulator with broad powers to set safety standards and ban risky items while the Nixon proposal would place authority under FDA. The Senate backs independent agency but would abolish FDA in the process.

George Nigh calls the event a springboard to attract conventions and tourism revenue, noting sponsors offset most costs for the five day gathering of 28 lieutenant governors at Fountainhead State Park.
