Impasse Broken On Wages In Rubber Strike Breakthrough Reached
Negotiators in the rubber workers strike reached a breakthrough on basic wages after five days of continuous bargaining. Labor Secretary W J Usery predicted the 16 week walkout would end, with URW president Peter Bommarito securing a wage agreement with Firestone. Final approval lies with the UAW Firestone committee in Akron as other contract items remain to be resolved. The economic package may set a pattern for other settlements and ends a long strike against Firestone Goodrich Goodyear and Uniroyal. About 60 000 workers have been on strike since April 21. The parties did not disclose details beyond noting the package is more expensive than others this year.
