Federal test to pay Air Force personnel by electronic checks
The Federal Reserve will run a test this fall using electronic pay checks for about 20 000 Air Force personnel to cut paper check use. The test simulates deposits via magnetic tape sent to Federal Reserve Banks and then to banks, with actual pay issued by traditional means. The program aims to reduce payment costs and prevent check volume from clogging the system as paper checks rise toward 54 billion annually by 1985.
