Children Olympians Struggle for Special Games Support
Inside Byrd Stadium a Mary land track team trains 55 mentally retarded children with only six volunteer coaches and limited parental support. Despite raising over 10,000 dollars from the Jaycees to travel to Los Angeles for the International Special Olympics, only seven DC children will attend. Coaches describe parental indifference yet celebrate sport as a stabilizing force for Bradley Pollard and teammates.
