Wilson's long Pentagon tenure ends amid dog jokes and draft talk
D. Harold Oliver notes Secretary of Defense Wilson will leave Washington after four years marked by blunt remarks and clashes over budget. Wilson faced McCarthy-era pressure, Air Force Navy Army feuds, and a push to modernize to rockets and missiles while maintaining cost efficiency. He weathered criticism over a “toot in mouth” line about National Guard and draft dodgers, but his influence and stubborn bluntness left a lasting mark on the Eisenhower era defense machine.
