Wyoming Eagle Killings Stir Senate Hearing
James C. Vogan testified before the Senate environmental appropriations subcommittee that he piloted a helicopter on eagle hunts last winter and observed more than 560 eagles killed. He said gunmen could kill up to three eagles daily, though he did not kill any himself. Interior Secretary Morton called the alleged killings a national outrage and said evidence would be sent to the Justice Department. Bald eagles are protected by law and no hunting permits for golden eagles have been issued since 1970. Rancher Doyle Vaughn reportedly paid for dead eagles and coyotes, with fees rising to a flat 80 dollars a day as killings increased. A McGee aide noted Western Society disputes the figures, arguing weather drives lamb losses more than predators.
