Nixon Opens New Bid To Keep Taiwan In UN

The Nixon administration launches fresh consultations with UN members on keeping Nationalist China in the United Nations while voting to seat Communist China this fall. State Department officials say the United States can offer an alternative to Albania's resolution to oust Taiwan and seat Peking. The plan follows Rogers after talks with Chiang Kai-shek's government and stresses maintaining peace and ensuring China's voice in world affairs. Critics like Sen. Dominick and Sen. Tower oppose the move, while Taiwan's ambassador in Washington cautions about admitting mainland China into the UN. The Committee of One Million denounces the policy as a strategic mistake.
