Brandt Fails To Win In Test Of Strength
The West German Bundestag deadlocked 247 to 247 with one abstention as Chancellor Willy Brandt failed to win a test of strength. The tie deepens the crisis for his 24 year old government and shows no majority for either his Socialist coalition or the Christian Democrats. Brandt urged cross party help to pass his budget and raised the possibility of a general election. He then asked for support on the third reading of the budget for his chancellery. The abstention by Baron Knut von Kuehlmann Stumm cost Brandt his majority.
