Eisenhower Presses For Budget Cuts Across Agencies
President Eisenhower told House leaders reductions in the spending portion of the budget are not possible without revising governing laws. He outlined potential cuts totaling 1.858 billion, including 50 million for the Federal National Mortgage Association, 24 million for college housing, 13 million for the Army Corps of Engineers, and possible withholdings of 516 million for Army procurement. He warned such cuts could weaken defense and delay needed programs, but noted some appropriations could be postponed without harming operations. He cited further possible reductions of 560 million for military aid, 200 million for military public works, and 254 million for the soil bank program.
