Kamal Junblatt, leader of the left in Lebanon, agrees conditionally to a five day cease fire to enable the election of a new president. He says Christian President Suleiman Franjieh would resign within the same period after a key strategy meeting with allies.
Fort Sill could gain an 85 cent an hour increase for wage scale non civil service workers under a proposed pay plan. Officials from the Defense Wage Fixing Authority and AFGE visited Fort Sill to collect data and discuss moving Fort Sill from its current wage area to the Oklahoma City district.
The Army proposes closing or downsizing 29 forts and bases in 17 states the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to save at least 42 million and cut 4500 civilian jobs. About 13128 military and civilian personnel would transfer and 16 sites would shut down including Ft Hamilton Ft Totten and Ft Devens.
Maude Smith 80, resident hostess at the Holy City of the Wichitas, cares for a burro named Maude and other pets. The burro has appeared in about 10 Easter pageants and will again on Easter Sunday. Maude has tended the Holy City for 48 years and welcomes every animal in need.
Benny and Billie Johnson assume leadership of the shelter after health issues forced Mary and Don Wilson to step down. The center, housing children from troubled homes, has been busy and adds a new play room as workers hammer and saw. Mrs. Johnson, with 16 years of motherhood experience, says she hopes to guide the center through its hectic period.
The third annual Arts for All campaign is nearly halfway to its $40,000 goal with $19,454 raised in advance gifts led by Mrs. Gilbert C. Gibson. Co chairs Mrs. Robert Dix and Sam Joyner III express optimism the goal will be met, citing Lawton institutions and citizens. Agencies include Lawton Fort Sill Art Guild Lawton Community Theatre Lawton aon Orchestra and more.
Fair skies and warmer temperatures are forecast for Southwest Oklahoma through Friday. The National Weather Service predicts mild days and rough Sunday nights with a high Friday near eighty and a tonight low in the mid forties. Wednesday’s high was 62 and the low 46.
The Teamsters strike widens nationwide after failed wage talks. 1,900 city bear pro labor officials offered no comment and no Taft Hartley injunction was indicated. Violence reported in Cleveland and Detroit as transit strikes loom.
Dr. Royce Means, director of the Jim Taliaferro Community Mental Health Center, announced a successful first year and future service expansion at a news conference marking the center’s first birthday. Since opening April 1, 1975, 1,602 people from eight counties have been treated at the center or its satellites in Duncan, Anadarko, and Altus.
