The Lounger notes three miles of Kansas forest from Mount Oread toward Mud Creek, recalling old timber belts around Lawrence and North Lawrence. He envies the lush growth, laments vanished primeval woods, and contrasts past forests with today’s scattered groves while inviting a short local excursion for scent and sight. He recalls childhood memories of streams, birds, and the Brandywine-inspired brook near his boyhood.
The narrator travels from Berlin to Dresden by rail, noting crowded stations, varied class cars, and overfilled racks. He describes Saxony’s farming shift to rye, the dominance of women laborers in harvest, forests, roads, and educated towns, then praises Saxon prosperity, schools, and industrial growth before reaching Dresden, “the Florence of Germany.”
Henry M. Brooks reflects on how friction matches replaced old domestic tinder-boxes around 1836. He recalls pine wood matches dipped in brimstone lit by sparks from steel and gun flints, kept in a tinder-box with burnt rags, to preserve fire. The piece contrasts early lucifers and loco foco matches with safer, modern friction matches and notes social resistance to the new device.
