A Field correspondent describes how professional alligator hunters stalk big reptiles in Florida by night. Three men use a lantern to blind the eyes, a harpoon, and a buckshot gun in a low, quiet boat. Successful kill yields tusked ivory teeth and a rotting head for teeth extraction. The paddler's skill and keeping light on the eyes are crucial to avoid the creature diving. The piece notes small alligators and an apparent nest found in palmetto near a pond with large eggs resembling swan eggs.
