Max Schmelzer a leading Leavenworth businessman shot himself at his Patt street residence just after 9 30 pm He undressed in his second story bedroom then drew a 32 Smith & Wesson revolver from a bureau and killed himself with a shot to the temple His wife was in the room reports say the revolver lay under his left side and the family had just returned from Kansas City He was 32 and a partner in Schmelzer & Son wholesale gun and sporting goods firm.

Firemen saved adjoining blocks but the Rocky Mountain News and Goole D McClintock blocks were aflame. A telegraph office across the alley melted its wires. one man, John Enright, died in the blaze. Cause unknown.
