In Washington on February 15 Senator Hale led opposition to Blair educational legislation with Senators Morgan Saulsbury and Blair speaking for the bill. Reading Strike Inquiry: Corbin Explains Causes and Costs
The congressional committee investigating the Reading strike met in a major city and questioned Austin Corbin. He cited Reading system capitalization at 40 million dollars, said the rail road owned the coal and iron firm, and described the strike origins as Knights of Labor refusal to move non union freight from Lehigh mines. He argued wages and mining costs, disputed private wage accords, and warned of rapid replacement of striking miners. He noted 40 million capital, 87 million coal and iron company stock, and 30 million mortgage, with ongoing arbitration questions and occupation protection costs. The hearing adjourned to continue tomorrow.
