Democratic Rally in Batowsy Ends in Tragedy and Tame Evening

The Grand Democratic Rally in Batowsy, Kansas attracted about fifteen undaunted supporters and fifty Republicans. Two men died, Judge John Martin and Col. Burris, whose exact fate is unclear as Burris could not speak due to hoarseness. Capt. Lew Green introduced Burris, who delivered a calm if defensive address praising the party and Grover Cleveland. The crowd’s response was modest, and rain later drenched cornfields.
