Mob overpowers jail to hang Weaver brothers in Harper County
A mob of forty to sixty masked men seized Sheriff Couch in Anthony Kansas and hanged the three Weaver brothers, Henry 25, Phillip 27, and Oliver 23, who had killed Abel Shearer in Danville Harper County. Fire and gunfire scattered the crowd as the men were killed, the scene witnessed by their mothers and families. The sheriff hid the prisoners until the district court convened, then the mob carried out the executions with Winchester rifles and revolvers. The events followed threats after Shearer was attacked and beaten by the brothers earlier in Danville.
