Samoa Disaster Trashes Pacific War Vessels
The Apia hurricane of March 15 to 17 wrecked six warships and ten vessels, killing 142 sailors from the United States and Germany. The Trenton Vandalia Nipsic and Eber suffered severe damage, with many officers and crew lost or missing. The Adler Olga Calliope and other ships were tossed onto reefs or driven ashore as the harbor’s reefs trapped ships and forced dramatic rescues and injuries.
