Disco balls still spin as retro craze endures in Louisville
Yolanda Baker, the “disco granny,” has made disco balls for 33 years at National Products Inc. in Louisville, evolving from a factory line of 27 workers producing about 1,000 spheres weekly to a solo operation. Prices range from 60 dollars for 6-inch sizes to 3,000 dollars for 48-inch balls, with a 36-inch ball as best seller. The balls appear in Madison Square Garden and NBA arenas, and are featured in Have A Nice Day Cafe and on tours with Madonna and Celine Dion. Baker, 55, and others note the enduring appeal of disco decor amid lingering nostalgia for the era.
