Rome AP reports the Soviet Union sharply lowered its seven year targets for agriculture reductions in promised gains in meat milk and butter per capita output. FAO experts warn the USSR may still struggle to meet the new schedule for increased food production.
Judge Charles Rankin of Douglas County Probate Court has been promoted to lieutenant colonel in the U S Army Reserve. Rankin serves as an instructor in the Judge Advocate General Corps at the Topeka USAR school.
Agatha M. Lewis 47 of 909 Vt. died at home after a life in Lawrence where she worked as secretary and saleswoman. Born June 24 1912 in Nora Sprigs Iowa she lived in Lawrence 32 years and worked at Sunflower Ordnance Works during WWII. Funeral Thursday 2 30 p m Cooper Warren Chapel Rev Max Thomas Plymouth Church. burial Memorial Park Cemetery. Survived by her mother Carrie Lewis. Ernestine Gatewood 45 died Monday in Eudora funeral Friday 2 p m Second Christ Church Lawrence Mother Zula Muldrow led by Rev W S Sims burial Oak Hill Cemetery. Body not in state casket will be open at the funeral home. Family at 901.
Mrs Nelle C Krause 73 of Los Angeles died Tuesday evening at Balowen Hospital after a yearlong illness. Born September 1 1886 in Lawrence she lived there until 1911 marriage to J Wesley Cox and later to Elmer J Krause of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be Friday at Pierce Brothers Mor ary in Los Angeles with burial in Ingle Cemetery. Survivors include four children eight grandchildren a brother and two sisters.
Today marks the last chance for drivers to buy licenses from independent merchants. Starting Thursday the Kansas Motor Vehicle Department and State Highway Patrol will handle sales. Locally the Patrol office in the Police Fire Building will be open all day Thursday and Saturday mornings. The Peppercam Real Estate Agency at 706 Mass St. has been a Lawrence license agent. Drivers will be notified about 30 days before expiration and must return the application form to the department. If late, apply at the local Patrol office, with a 60 day grace period before testing. non valid license after due date. A learner permit process begins at the Patrol office with eye test and written exam before permit issuance. Previously one could sign at the license agent office.
Lawrence High School football coach Al Woolard spoke to the Sertoma Club at the Hotel Eldridge praising his 1959 team as a wonder squad with 31 straight victories. He credited the players for their drive and shared Atchison game photos showing a 34-6 Lawrence win and introduced three assistants.
Emil Hack of Route 3 is named Douglas County committee chairman for the state Agriculture Hall of Fame fundraising drive. The Kansas campaign to raise 5 million dollars to build the national shrine near Kansas City, Kansas, aims to set a pattern for other states with Raymond C. Firestone and Clark W. Davis named national leaders in the drive.
Donald Dowers was elected president of the Lakeview Fishing and Shooting Association. The Lakeview Club sits about five miles northwest of Lawrence. Officers named include Lewis Rake first vice president R. E. Duffens second vice president and Howard Wiseman secretary treasurer. Four directors elected for two year terms are Rake Roy Moore George Corn and Home McElroy. Directors with one year left are Dowers Duffens Junlug Underwood M. C. Wills and Arthur Brewster.
Arensberg Shoe Store at 819 Mass. St. announces a grand opening over Thursday to Saturday after a full remodel. Owner Jack Arensberg moved from Atchison to Lawrence in 1988 and reports strong early business and optimism for the city's growth.
Tokyo reports Typhoon Vera as the worst disaster in Japan. The known dead reach 3,174, surpassing the 1934 Typhoon Mario total of 3,066. About 1,776 are missing, with figures likely to rise as communications are restored.

The Kansas Editors Day sponsored by the William Allen White Journalism School will be held Saturday October 17 in Flint Hall with editors from across the state. Douglass Cater Washington editor of Reporter Magazine will speak on Government by Publicity at 11 am. A Hall of Fame election and Wrangle session precede a buffet lunch before the KU Kansas State game.
Captain Stone, owner and pilot of two large planes, toured air ports on Sundays and holidays with brother Clay ton selling rides. In 1939 at Love Field Dallas he sold a deteriorating plane for a handsome profit and soon joined Braniff as a co pilot. He piloted major Braniff routes, later serving two years in World War II with the Air Transport Command.

Fee payment began today at Kansas University with students paying in Strong Hall. The plan divides pay by initials M to Z today, A to F on Thursday, G to L on Friday, and all others Saturday. A $2 daily late penalty applies after the schedule.
